1. NELFUND Student Loan
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is the Federal Government’s interest-free student loan scheme. It is one of the cleanest topics for a how-to guide because the process is fully online, requirements are specific, and it has high search demand.
Who can apply
- Nigerian citizen
- Enrolled (or newly admitted) in a public tertiary institution (federal/state university, polytechnic, college of education, or technical/vocational school)
- Valid NIN and BVN
- School must have uploaded your details to the NELFUND Student Verification System
- No previous degree (undergraduate focus); private universities and most postgraduate programmes are currently excluded
Documents needed
- NIN
- BVN
- JAMB registration number (or matric number)
- Admission letter
- Active email, phone number, and bank account that matches your BVN
How to apply (step-by-step)
1. Visit the official portal only: portal.nelf.gov.ng (or nelf.gov.ng).
2. Create an account with your email.
3. Verify identity with JAMB details or NIN.
4. Select your institution and enter your JAMB/matric number.
5. Upload admission letter (compulsory) and optional documents (student ID, fee invoice).
6. Choose whether you want tuition only or tuition + ₦20,000 monthly upkeep allowance.
7. Review, accept terms (including GSI mandate), and submit.
Tuition is paid directly to the school. Upkeep (if selected) goes to your account while school is in session. Applications are free and usually take 15–30 minutes if your school has already verified your records.
2. Instant Personal Loans from Licensed Loan Apps (Most popular everyday topic)
Apps such as FairMoney, Carbon, Branch, Renmoney, PalmCredit, and QuickCheck (all CBN- or FCCPC-approved) are the go-to for quick cash. They require no collateral and process applications on a smartphone.
Common requirements
- Age 18–60 (some start at 22)
- Nigerian phone number linked to BVN
- Valid BVN (and increasingly NIN)
- Active bank account in your name
- Smartphone with internet
- For larger amounts: 3–6 months bank statement or consistent transaction history
New users usually start with small limits (₦5,000–₦50,000). Limits and rates improve with on-time repayment. Interest is typically 2.5–30% monthly depending on the app and your profile.
How to apply (general process for most apps)
1. Download the official app from Google Play or App Store (verify it is on the FCCPC approved list).
2. Register with your phone number and create a PIN.
3. Complete KYC: enter BVN/NIN, take a selfie, and link your bank account.
4. Grant permission for the app to analyse phone/bank data (this is how they score you).
5. Select loan amount and repayment period.
6. Accept the offer. Funds usually hit your account in minutes to a few hours.
3. Other solid options
- Renmoney or Credit Direct personal/business loans — Higher limits (up to ₦5–6 million) for salary earners or documented businesses. More document-heavy than pure apps but still faster than traditional banks.
- Bank of Industry (BOI) SME / Youth loans — Lower interest (often single-digit) but longer process and more documentation (CAC, business plan, etc.). Good if your audience is entrepreneurs.
NOTE
Lenders are advise to check the latest FCCPC approved lenders list, consider high interest rates and the Global Standing Instruction (GSI) that allows lenders to debit any BVN-linked account if you default.
