Access to affordable capital remains one of the biggest headaches for Nigerian traders — from market women restocking provisions to roadside vendors and artisans. Commercial bank rates are high, collateral demands are steep, and paperwork is often impossible for informal operators.
Fortunately, the Federal Government’s Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), managed by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), continues to run TraderMoni and MarketMoni — zero-interest, collateral-free micro-credit facilities specifically designed for traders. Recent nationwide biometric disbursements of MarketMoni Phase 2 confirm the programme is still active.
What the Loans Offer
- TraderMoni: Aimed at street vendors, food sellers, kiosk operators, artisans, fruit sellers, and other petty traders. Starting facility of ₦50,000 (zero interest). Graduates to higher amounts on timely repayment.
- MarketMoni: Targeted at market women and traders in structured associations or cooperatives. ₦50,000 initial working-capital loan (up to ₦100,000 on graduation), zero interest.
- Key terms (both products):
– 0% interest
– No collateral required
– 3-month moratorium (grace period) before repayments begin
– Total tenure around 6 months
– Flexible weekly or monthly repayments
– Direct disbursement into the beneficiary’s bank account after verification
These are revolving loans — repayments feed a fund that supports the next set of traders, and successful repayment unlocks larger amounts.
Who Can Apply?
- Nigerian citizens aged roughly 18–55 (TraderMoni leans younger, up to about 40 in some descriptions)
- Active petty trader, market stall operator, artisan, or small informal retailer
- For MarketMoni: preferably a member of a registered market women association or cooperative
- Valid NIN and BVN
- Active bank account (or ability to open one)
- Physical presence of the business (stall, kiosk, or trading location) that can be verified
Civil servants and formal salary earners are generally not the target group.
How to Apply (Current Process – In-Person Only)
Online portals have been used in past rounds, but the official guidance stresses physical registration at Local Government Area (LGA) Council Secretariats to prevent scams. There is a GEEP desk officer in every one of the 774 LGAs.
Four simple steps:
1. Visit your LGA Council Secretariat during working hours and ask for the GEEP Desk Officer.
2. Collect and fill the free physical registration booklet (bio-data, trade description, NIN, BVN, phone number, bank details).
3. Field enumerators will visit your market stall or trading point for physical verification (photos, GPS, confirmation of activity).
4. Once approved, the loan is disbursed directly into your bank account. You get a 3-month grace period before repayments start.
Documents to have ready: NIN slip/card, BVN, valid ID, passport photograph, and details of your trading location. Registration is free — do not pay anyone.
Tips for Success
- Belong to (or join) a recognised market association or cooperative — this strengthens MarketMoni applications.
- Keep accurate records of your daily sales; it helps during verification and future higher-tier applications.
- Repay on time. Successful repayment is the fastest route to larger facilities.
- Beware of fake agents or websites demanding fees. Official process is free and happens at the LGA secretariat.
Other Options Worth Noting
While GEEP is the most trader-specific zero-interest federal programme currently running, other avenues exist:
– SMEDAN Grow Fund (₦500 million zero-interest revolving facility) — channelled through trade associations and cooperatives rather than individuals; members can access ₦250,000–₦500,000 for working capital, tools, or workspace.
– Microfinance banks and fintechs (Moniepoint, NIRSAL MFB, LiquidCrest, etc.) that offer faster but higher-interest working-capital loans based on transaction history.
– State-level schemes that occasionally appear (e.g., interest-free or low-interest trader support in certain states).
NOTE: Always verify the latest details directly at your LGA GEEP desk or via the official NSIPA/GEEP channels, as processes can be updated. Stay away from anyone asking for “processing fees.”
