Job Purpose

  • The Neurosurgeon will be responsible for the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and comprehensive management of disorders affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.
  • This role requires a high level of expertise in performing complex cranial and spinal surgeries, such as tumour resections, cerebrovascular interventions, and spinal fusions.
  • As a senior member of the medical team, the Neurosurgeon will be a leader in advancing the hospital’s neurosurgical capabilities.
  • This includes contributing to the development of clinical protocols, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and driving clinical research to improve patient outcomes.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Clinical Practice:

  • Diagnose and surgically treat a wide range of neurosurgical conditions, including brain tumours, traumatic brain injuries, spinal disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, and functional disorders.
  • Perform advanced surgical procedures, including craniotomies, neuroendoscopic surgeries, microdiscectomies, spinal fusions, and carotid endarterectomies.
  • Utilise cutting-edge technology, such as intraoperative MRI, neuronavigation, and neurophysiological monitoring, to enhance surgical precision and patient safety.
  • Conduct regular outpatient clinics for pre- and post-operative patient assessments and follow-up care.
  • Provide emergency on-call services for acute neurosurgical presentations, including trauma and stroke.
  • Patient-Centred Care:
    • Deliver empathetic, compassionate, and culturally competent care to patients and their families, often dealing with complex and life-altering diagnoses.
    • Provide clear, thorough, and understandable explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations, ensuring informed consent.
    • Ensure meticulous and timely documentation of patient records, complying with all ethical, legal, and hospital standards.

    Team Collaboration:

    • Participate in and often lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss and plan comprehensive treatment strategies with neurologists, neuroradiologists, neuro-oncologists, and rehabilitation specialists.
    • Collaborate closely with radiologists to interpret complex imaging (MRI, CT, DSA) and plan image-guided interventions.
    • Partner with oncologists to develop integrated treatment plans for patients requiring adjuvant chemo- or radiotherapy.
    • Work alongside nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy teams to optimise perioperative, post-operative, and long-term rehabilitative care.
