HBM Nigeria Plc (Formerly Lafarge Africa Plc) is seeking a responsible and experienced Shift Leader to coordinate shift activities, supervise operational teams, ensure production efficiency, and maintain safe and reliable plant operations. Job Title: Shift Leader
Location: Ewekoro, Ogun
Role Purpose
- The role is responsible for achieving the shift’s budgeted clinker production target while ensuring safe and reliable operations, consistent product quality, operational efficiency and effective cost management, in line with the Plant’s annual objectives.
Role Responsibilities
- Monitor and optimise all aspects of the production line, from quarry to packing plant.
- Take the lead in enforcing HBM Nigeria safety rules and guidelines through Visible Felt Leadership (VFL), while ensuring adherence by the team.
- Coordinate plant emergency response and ensure the effective implementation of the Emergency Response Plan (ERP), evacuation plan and emergency procedures.
- Coordinate the activities of all service departments to ensure the production plants remain in good operating condition.
- Receive equipment after maintenance/repairs from the execution team and ensure that all post-maintenance activities, including cleaning by the maintenance crew, are completed.
- Manage the day-to-day running of the plant on a shift basis, ensuring adherence to KPIs through the setting of priorities and direction for the plant shift team.
- Coordinate the activities of the maintenance team on the night shift and call for assistance when required, in accordance with the call-out procedure.
- Monitor results and initiate corrective actions where required.
- Participate in the planning and organisation of short- and long-term plant stoppages.
- Control re-bricking of the kiln and other activities during major shutdowns.
- Monitor the performance of contractors on the plant.
- Control production activities to ensure compliance with Group environmental standards and maintain good housekeeping.
- Continuously monitor all plant process lines using available tools to ensure employee safety, stable equipment operation, equipment integrity within prescribed design limitations, operating targets and environmental regulations.
- Coordinate plant resources to troubleshoot, inspect and maintain plant equipment as required to meet production demands and prevent failures.
- Coordinate plant turnaround maintenance, Root Cause Analysis, reliability activities and other Company best practices and initiatives, including test drilling, wrecking, clearing, bricklaying and casting works.
- Guide and train subordinates and identify training needs.
- Appraise subordinates annually and recommend promotions, transfers and disciplinary actions where appropriate.
- Monitor and control the efficiency and effectiveness of the shift team.
- Review shift records on the status of operating equipment, breakdowns, stoppages, repair works and other information related to shift activities.
- Routinely check plant output and the quality of all processed materials and take corrective action as required.
- Prepare and sign authority-to-withdraw material slips, overtime requests, work orders, permit slips and other forms required for job activities.
- Control the proper utilisation of equipment, tools and materials and ensure unused materials are returned in good condition for safekeeping.
- Record abnormal or unusual operations and correct the situation or report it to the Production Coordinator.
- Request, through the Work Request Form, the resolution of malfunctions, defects or breakdowns from the Superior and/or Maintenance Shift Team.
- In the event of an emergency during the shift, stop activities and request the Maintenance Shift Team to resolve the emergency.
- Comply with Environmental and Quality Management System programmes.
- Uphold and maintain EMS and NIS ISO 9001:2000 requirements.
- Control the recording of the daily production report and daily log sheet.
- Comply with EMS Production Instrumentation activities.
- Ensure involvement in the implementation and maintenance of the Integrated Management System in the plant.
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Requirements
Educational Qualification and Other Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any Engineering discipline.
Critical Knowledge:
- Good knowledge of cement manufacturing processes.
- Good knowledge of product quality parameters and quality control tests.
- Good knowledge of computer-aided systems for kiln and mill operation.
- Ability to take initiative based on sound problem-solving skills.
Critical Experience:
- Graduate in any Engineering discipline with 3–5 years’ experience as a Shift Manager or Production Coordinator in a cement plant.
